Scaling down large images with imagemagick

November 24, 2014 by Marco Steinhäuser Leave a Comment

Problem A friend of mine is photographing a lot and feels in charge to share his pictures to others via Internet. He suffered from the size of his high-resolution pictures taken en masse: he simply couldn't find an appropriate platform for sharing a dozen GB. Having a look at it I found single pictures with the size of 12 megapixels at ~ 6 MB. For use at the Internet and even for just having a [Read more...]

Setting up OXID eShop on a LAMP system on LinuxMint

December 5, 2013 by Marco Steinhäuser Leave a Comment

This is more or less a notice to myself. I switched to LinuxMint recently and tried to setup a LAMP system including all modules in order to run OXID eShop on it (I basically need it for my daily work). This became fairly different to the Ubuntu installations I ran before, and I found some dodgy tricks that I want to document here. First off, this is the exact Linux version I run, found with $ [Read more...]

Connecting a HP Deskjet 3050A J611 to a DD-WRT Router when using Ubuntu

November 3, 2012 by Marco Steinhäuser 3 Comments

Today, we bought a new all-in-one device for home use, a HP Deskjet 3050A J611 series, that was told to be capable for WiFi connections. The delivered software on a CD is available for Windows and Mac OS machines only. Now I run Ubuntu which shall not be a problem as all HP devices are supported by default on this operating system. And right: I got it working very simply. Connect the USB cable [Read more...]

Display a Diff as a Webpage using diff2html

September 26, 2012 by Marco Steinhäuser 5 Comments

Sometimes, especially for documentation purposes, it might be necessary to show a unified diff as a HTML page. As we will ditch Basic theme in OXID eShop version 4.7/5.0, we had to document how to convert a customized theme based on Basic if you want to update. Included, we wanted to deliver a visual diff of the categorylist.tpl file to show how the category tree was loaded before and how it [Read more...]

Installing OXID eShop via a Linux Terminal Using the Official SVN

October 5, 2011 by Marco Steinhäuser Leave a Comment

Sometimes, it is necessary to install a new version of OXID eShop quickly. Downloading it from the official download page, extracting the archive and uploading it again to your hosting provider can be a time-consuming and error-prone process due to CRC errors. If you have SSH access to your server terminal or if you work on a local Linux machine or VM-ware appliance, there is a much smoother [Read more...]

Switching to Ubuntu Part III: Working with VirtualBox

November 10, 2010 by Marco Steinhäuser Leave a Comment

After publishing my last blog post about switching to Ubuntu, I took a short break for a while. I had a few problems: I couldn't get the VPN running as my company was using a proprietary protocol. I couldn't find a good Exchange client replacement under Linux. My company had bought me an iPhone and iTunes was not available on Linux. I came up with a solution to bypass these problems. I [Read more...]

My Impressions of Chemnitz Linux-Tage 2010

March 17, 2010 by Marco Steinhäuser 2 Comments

More or less spontaneously, I decided to go to "Chemnitzer Linux-Tage" for the first time, the probably second biggest Linux event in Germany, and was really surprised: Not only Linux geeks but a very mixed up audience of Germans and Non-Germans, developers, administrators and interested people in any kind of open source software found together in a very familiar and comfortable atmosphere. In [Read more...]

Switching to Ubuntu Part II – how to install Twhirl

November 2, 2009 by Marco Steinhäuser 1 Comment

Of course, you have to announce your new blog posts over Twitter. A cool twitter client is not the worst idea - I personally decided to run Twhirl for this purpose because Twhirl is able to run multiple accounts. As Twhirl is based on the platform Adobe Air, you first have to install this one. Go to http://get.adobe.com/air/, download it to your /home/ folder. Open the command line and type [Read more...]
